Laurel 'Lolly' Catching Anderson
discussed her life philosophy and third career, writing.
Ms. Anderson produces The Spiritual Times monthly newsletter.
Anderson practiced oil and gas law in Oklahoma and Texas before becoming a fundraiser for her alma mater Mary Baldwin College, then the University of Virginia Law School Foundation, the Public Broadcasting Service (PBS), the National Gallery of Art, the National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum, and her law school alma mater, Oklahoma City University School of Law.

The Good, The Bad and The Ugly of Publishing
Kirk L. Bjornsgaard
discussed the archives and goals of historical Oklahoma Regional Studies publications.
Bjornsgaard currently works with the University of Oklahoma Press as Acquisitions Editor for Regional Studies.

Greek Summer and
Why I Wrote It

Dr. Doug Miller UCO Professor, retired
In later years of his life, Miller realized the idylic summer of discussions about Greek philosophers with his best friend, fellow lifeguard during a tour in the U.S. Navy was his intellectual coming of age. Encouragement from his friend brought forth Greek Summer.
Dr. Miller urged writers to read great classic writers. His favorites are Jack London, Martin Eden, Fitgerald, Plato's Republic, Atlas Shrugged, and Conrad Richter.
According to Miller, everyone needs a Greek Summer.
Dr. Miller's next book is Dunbarton Witch Trial.

Writing Memories From Your Heart
Molly Lemmons
"If you can think it, you can say it, and, if you can say it, you can write it."
She believes that anyone can write historical facts but adding your memories and feelings is writing from you heart.
Lemmons book includes stories from her life. For those of you who still have parents, grandparents, etc., perhaps you would like to make it a family history.
Each attendee received a handout with a recap of the lesson and suggested scenarios for kick starting your memoirs.

The Art of Craft:
Ways to Become a Better Writer

Marcia Preston
is well qualified for this workshop, having been an excellent English teacher as well as a successful writer. She will give tips on self-editing, fact-checking, and improving flow and music in the use of language.
Her two most recent novels are general fiction. The Butterfly House, a women's novel under the byline Marcia Preston, was released in January 2005. Recently released in trade paperback, The Butterfly House received a five-star review in the June issue of Cosmopolitan in the United Kingdom.
The Piano Man (April 2006) deals with the emotional and psychological results of a heart transplant.

Writing the Western Novel
Alma Blair
Blair finished one of her husband, Clifford Blair's books, PeaceMaker: Legacy. She completed two more in the Peacemakers series, Buffalo Brigade, Conquistador's Gold, then wrote three more on her own; Unwitting Witness,Of Shadow and Substance,Dark Side of Paradise, Shadows of the Past, western novels. Blair presented a well-organized, instructive workshop with insight into character developement from what you know. She instructed writers present on do's and don'ts from plot structure to writing with emotions.

Rodger Harris
Oral Historian
looking forward to the Centennial celebration, brought a slide presentation illustrating how to research at the Oklahoma History Center. Harris answered questions like, "What is oral history?" and "How to conduct an interview." He went through the subjects on the free cds brought for each writer.
Dr. Richard Trout cancelled.

April 15
Don’t Hesitate, Collaborate
Peggy Moss Fielding
Chick Lit for Foxy Hens by Peggy Fielding and her collaborators is targeting the market of mature women.
Each one explained the area of expertise which brought out her best.
Must be team player, follow a timeline that works for everyone, critique each other gently are a few of the pointers discussed.
You really needed to be there to experience the verve and excitement of these special writers.

Dr. Altschuler gave a lively illustration of the difficulties getting your book published. How long it took to get his book to press because of editor's work practices.

How do you create a market for the book you are writing?
David Farris
In September of 1995, Farris realized the dream of publishing his first book. He is the author of Mysterious Oklahoma, More Mysterious Oklahoma and has most recently published a second edition of his 1999 book Oklahoma Outlaw Tales. His books are consistently on Border’s top 10 local best sellers list. He is also a popular lecturer on such topics as Oklahoma mysteries, folklore and outlaws; and has been the subject of more than 30 articles and broadcast interviews. Farris is a graduate of the University of Central Oklahoma earning a B.A. in Communication.
