SKIRVIN
Stever Lackmeyer and
Jack Money,
Oklahoman newspaper reporters,
will discuss their latest work, Skirvin, a tale that took the authors three years to write.
"Skirvin is a story of people, scoundrels, politics and dreamers."
The story of W. B. Skirvin and his hotel was so big it needed a book to do it justice. Lackmeyer and Money used a novel-style approach to tell the tale of a hotel that first opened in 1911 and is now known as the Skirvin Hilton.
"It's the story of one historic building's refusal to go down." Skirvin was named a finalist in the 2010 Oklahoma Book Awards.

Make those skeletons dance!
Carolyn Leonard Heavener
says writing and researching family history is a fun hobby and is one of the most popular activities in the world. Problem is, when you start opening Pandora's box of ancestors you don't know what you will find. So if you can't make the skeleton in your closet go away -- you just have to teach it to dance. Carolyn serves on the board for the Oklahoma Writers Federation and is an officer in DAR (Daughters of American Revolution), associate of Daughters of Holland Dames, member of Daughters of 1812 wars, First Families of the Oklahoma Twin Territories, historical societies in several states, and the prestigious Mayflower Society. "Who’s Your Daddy? A Guide to Genealogy from Start to Finish," took thirty years to write but only a quick change of title to sell. The book is a result of my many adventures in tiptoeing through tombstones with a camera, a notebook and a pencil. I learned the hard way, so I want to help other people find the easy road to discovering their family's place in history.
Carolyn will discuss her new book which includes information on identifying gravestone icons, appreciating cemetery art, keeping track of your ancestors and descendants, travel to ancestral locations, courthouse research, Internet assistance, organizing your stuff and how to publish.
